Why It’s Lit
Because FN Meka is the first augmented reality (AR) artist to land a record deal with a major record label.
Capitol Records signed FN Meka on August 14, 2022 but then dropped him 9 days later due to controversy that fuelled racist stereotypes.
Believe It Or Not
FN Meka’s lyrical content is generated by proprietary artificial intelligence technology.
The AI analyzes content from existing video games, social media, and pop music to produce lyrics.
The creators behind the persona of FN Meka, Brandon Le and Anthony Martini, are cofounders of Factory New, a company that specializes in developing and scaling up virtual beings online.
They created FN Meka in 2019 and set up his Soundcloud originally to sell Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).
Since then FN Meka quickly amassed a huge fan base with a staggering 10.3 million on TikTok and 219k followers on Instagram.
Le and Martini believe traditional artists and repertoire (A&R) are “inefficient and unreliable”.
So they’re planning to build a more sustainable business model around a Marvel-like franchise for music, where they can make unlimited hit singles with ageless manufactured artists.
Drop This Fact
Houston-based rapper Kyle The Hooligan is the voice behind FN Meka.
According to Kyle The Hooligan, he wrote and performed FN Meka’s first three songs, “Internet,” “Moonwalkin’,” and “Speed Demon”.
He also accuses Factory New of stealing his entire brand identity and ghosting him without pay.
